Aquatic Pathway 2024-ongoing
I am developing a body of work that traces the possible pathways to freedom taken by my ancestors in Florida. Some fled to the Bahamas and others to Mexico, and this history has become central to my own process of decolonizing myself. My maternal grandparents, Samuel and Josephine Love, traveled with the Seminoles from Georgia to Florida, and my family carries Black Seminole lineage.
For the past two years I have researched escape routes from Florida, especially the “Saltwater Railroad” to the Bahamas and the route into Mexico. This new series grows out of that research, using blues tied to African spirituality and the element of water. I have completed five works on paper and am developing a large 80 by 60 inch canvas to build a visual language around this history.
